Caharin was born with a well recognized family name: Rahl. However, Caharin's mother is not Kahlan Rahl, the well-known Mother Confessor and wife to Lord Rahl, Master of D'Hara. Richard Rahl's first wife was Du Chaillu, one of the Baka Tau Mana. Now, those familiar with the story of Richard's exploits know that this marriage came about through a old law of the Baka Tau Mana. When the Majendie people captured Du Chaillu, Richard happened to save her. Richard killed 30 of the powerful Baka Tau Mana (then Baka Ban Mana) blade masters, earning him the title the Caharin. For this reason, he became the wife of Du Chaillu. True, Richard was never joined in union with Du Chaillu; her child was a result of the Majendie captors. However, Richard's spirit as a husband lived in that child. In honor of her husband, Du Chaillu named her child Caharin.

Caharin grew up with the people of the Baka Ban Mana, beginning training at an early age to become one of the renowned blade masters. However, this was not the lifestyle he wanted. Between lessons, Caharin wandered in the woods, enjoying the sight and smells of the trees. Occasionally, he would serve as a guide for people wandering through the forest, or traveling hunting groups from his tribe. Then, Caharin began to develop the gift. Three Sisters of the Light came to the village one day looking for a gifted child. Refusing to wear a collar, Caharin killed the sisters with his sword. From that day forward, Caharin promised never to use a sword again. He took the dacras from the sisters and decided to wield those weapons, to remember...

He developed his gift through rigorous self-training and continued to practice his skills with all sorts of daggers. Time and time again, he found himself spending more time alone in the woods. One day, without a word, Caharin left his fellow tribesmen in search of a different life, a better life, or maybe just a life better suited to his tastes. Caharin came across Richard in the town of Hartland, but he had no desire to speak with him. He grew up in a different world than his 'father'. Caharin knew that Richard was not his true father, and saw no reason to follow his views. He was here to make his own decisions.
