He went on to describe the tattoos as best he could, but it was not necessary. I already knew exactly what they looked like. Every practitioner of magic from the Valley of the Elves had this image burned into their minds early on in our training. It belonged to a sect of our people that was long believed to be extinct. This sect was outcast almost a millenia ago. The tattoo was developed by those of our people who could not use magic at all. Their jealousy of those with the art became pure hate but their fear kept them in check. Until they discovered the power of the tattoo. On pure chance this tattoo was developed. It rendered the wearer immune to magic but at great cost. It ate away at the wearer's soul until that person was no more than an empty shell. The stronger your will the longer it took. It was a thing of pure evil. The valley elves defeated the sect once before, but only with the invaluable assistance of their Bladesingers. The Bladesingers were minor practitioners of the arts who were more skilled in arms than magic. Their blades lead to the defeat of the tattoo wielding sect. Since then, the elves have focused on research and peace. Only a few Bladesingers remain, and fewer are joining their ranks. We do not have sufficient numbers to defend ourselves. I explained it to him and answered the rest of his questions. He was hoping to receive word from Cidwick, one of his Wardens, and was going to try and form some sort of defense against this new threat. He showed me a note from Cidwick that he had recieved by hawk. It told the High Tower to 'search the sky' and said that 'the time of the serpent has come. ' The serpent was an obvious reference to the snake-like tattoo. I did not understand the other. I decided to inquire about it at the High Tower. Perhaps someone will know or will at least allow me entrance so that I might discover it. As I turned to leave, Marhic mumbled something about the leader. I turned back and asked him to repeat himself. He told me that the leader had a strange diagonal scar that cut across his entire face. Where the scar met his hairline there was a white streak. I sat down in shock. Niku, what have you done? *closes the journal and prepares for her visit to the High Tower* |
