GGJ Jam Game

Burden was made for the 2014 Global Game Jam. The game submission is on the Burden Global Game Jam page.

Burden is a top-down, roguelike game that follows a nameless warrior who seeks a mysterious power to help fulfill a promise made long ago. Collect powerful weapons and mystical tokens as you progress through a dungeon that holds ancient secrets.

Burden came together really well. We had a well balanced team, some solid upfront design, and Scott and I were both very experienced in Unity3D at this point. We settled on a Zelda-styled room-crawling dungeon style game early in the process. The animation when moving between rooms was an important feature, so we mimicked the behavior of the original Zelda games.

The GGJ is a 48 hour jam, but we ended up with a very functional game. As a developer, I feel it’s really important to prioritize getting everyone’s contribution into the game. This can be tough because you’re typically getting animations and art all on the last day - or even the last couple of hours. But for Burden we had a really good framework to get the animations and additional enemies into the game.

Please forgive the low quality of the 2014 youtube video.
